People had always placed 3dsMax side by side with Maya, matter of fact, they even made comparisons between the two softwares which contributed to making the already famous softwares gods amongst softwares. I remember clearly, then i was a newbie and i just wanted to get my hands on something and start creating stuffs. I didnt have anyone around me using the softwares so the comparisms didnt really mean much at the time plus, i didnt have any idea what they were talking about then. You hear things like modelling, rigging then rendering, next is rendering in passes, anti- aliasing and the list just keeps going on. For someone that didnt even know how to model, it was discouraging enough to just forgo everything and concentrate on playing soccer. But i somehow went with max and i've been getting better everyday with it.
As far as i've come which is still nothing to where some pros have reached and where i am going, they did say then that the principles for animating remains thesame for all softwares even if the name of their tools or GI's are different. Ok, i just did something i complained of in the first paragraph. G.I means graphic interface which is in lay man terms, what you see on screen when your software loads up for you to use. Which may include viewports, menu bars, tool bars, command panel, option bars etc. Just like you see in word or Excel but in this case the image below is exactly what i'm talking about.
Well, asides the principles for animating been thesame, there was something that people often complained about max. It's a wonderful programme with wonderful rendering capabilities and has a variety of modelling techniques but it's unstable. Well my friends mocked me a lot of times and tried to talk me into using maya and i would have but the problem was that, i've gone too far with max. Too far to turn back or start afresh. I was just learning how to animate at the time and if you've put in a lot like i have done getting to where i was back then, you'ld understand what i am saying. Headstrong with only my guts to side with me, i went on until i got to where i am today.
For me, i love max a lot and i think it's a wonderful programme. However, it troubles me to know that it crashes a times or that you can no longer work with a file you've been working on for days or weeks, which you again unfortunately worked on say an hour back and wont open up anymore disallowing you access to the file and it's content. That truely is crazy and disturbing. I think every software has there own unique problems too but this is one of max that i wish wasn't a problem associated with it. In time to come, I might want to learn how to use Maya as it's clearly the industry's standard for Film production pipeline and i now see reasons why it's so. But asides this, 3dsMax is a very good and fascinating programme. So which software should you use? People have a lot of reasons for using whatever software they use. i think you should do an elaborate survey and comparisons before coming to a conclusion.
